Women with Drive Summit

March 3, 2016

The 2nd Annual Women With Drive Summit was held in Toronto, ON March 3rd 2016.  Arnold Bros. Transport was proud to be a sponsor of the event that focused on recruiting, retaining and mentoring women in the Trucking Industry.

The motivating opening speaker was Canadian politician and businesswoman Hazel McCallion. At 95 years young and still affectionately known as “Hurricane Hazel” the successful long running Mayor (1978-2014) of Mississauga, ON spoke about the importance of women seeking non-traditional careers and how to overcome obstacles.

An Emerging Leaders panel represented by women in the industry focused on the importance of work generation blends, work life balance, not being afraid of change and the importance of mentorship.  Diversity in the work place was given some well deserved attention in conjunction with the importance of inclusion of individuals.

Currently women make up only 3% of all truck drivers which presents a huge economic opportunity for women to seize a career in the trucking industry which has been traditionally male-dominated. Connecting with these women and raising awareness about the various careers opportunities that exist in the trucking industry has been the biggest challenge.

Trucking HR Canada has spearheaded the development of a national advisory committee which will lead the development of an employment action plan for women in the trucking industry. The plan will include:

·         A national employment strategy

·         Identification of best practices

·         Identification of challenges, including existing barriers

·         Promoting the trucking industry as an industry of choice for women

Ponder the candidate you believe to be unique and instead of fearing they will not fit into your organization consider the varied perspective they may bring to it.
